Have you ever built a new house? We are in the midst of our new home, they are framing the main level which is so exciting! I am loving the picking out of lights, cabinets, appliances, etc...
What I am not loving, is getting the quote. Why is it that everything I choose seems to be so much more than our allowance?
Is it that I have such good taste? :)
Did our builder give us a completely low amount to take to the bank?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I am doing my best to stay within our budget, it is so hard.
Roger especially struggles with all of this. He gets so frustrated. I really try to think positively and know that I am trying very hard to be good and not go overboard. Personally, I think that that frustrates him too. I so want to enjoy building our house.
I know, I know in a year it won't matter, but right now it's very stressing.
What was your experience like when you built your house?
This seems like such a down blog, but that's where I am at right now. Positive thoughts tomorrow!

So, I'm wondering....if it won't matter in a year, then don't let it ruin the experience of building now! You 2 both want nice stuff and I'm sure you weren't quoted the best, but you want good stuff, so sometimes you have to pay more.....then there's that dilemma of going over budget, yikes!
That's just how it is with building! It has always cost us more than what was on our budget!
Vern also built our house. We enjoyed the experience, but had to stay on them. We did receive an extra bill of $1000 at the end (that we had to pay after closing) because he said we went over budget. Who knows. That was over 20 years ago, and a lot smaller house than yours. It's really hard to get exactly what you think you want and stay in budget. Can't wait to see the final product though. I'm sure it will be beautiful! Carrie
It is very frustrating, as I also seem to have expensive taste. This is what Matt and I did...we took the original amount to the bank (with the allowances they gave us, however I had them bump up a few of the allowances because I knew I wanted more expensive things in certain area). Then, anything we decided we wanted upgraded while we were building we tried to pay for out of pocket. We decided that we didn't want to keep adding to our mortagage (it was at a price we were comfortable with)and paying for some of the upgrades out of pocket was an easy way for us to keep in check what we could and could not afford.
Another thing we did was to decide if it was something we could upgrade later...for example, we upgraded our countertops because we knew that was something that we would have for a long, long time. However, our closets we let the builder put in their standard stuff (which was still very nice) knowing that we could have Closet Craft come in later and redo them easily should we change our minds down the road. This also saved us money up front.
I hope this helps you. Building is a very fun experience, but also stressful. I learned from experience that, after you are moved in, some of the small things you stress about during the building process are not that big of a deal. You just feel so blessed to be in a new home with those you love.
Keep your head up - you'll have a brand new beautiful home before you know it!
I loved the building process. I loved all the details...picking out lights, trim style, window style, carpet, tile, cabinets, etc. Yes, sometimes it is difficult, but just hang in there. It is so rewarding to see it unfold in front of your eyes. I will never forget how excited Eric was to take me into the kitchen to see the cabinets for the first time!
Yep,Kim it is hard to stay in budget. Everyone told us that add some extra to the loan before you close...because everyone goes over. I was determined to NOT go over our budget....But when I got to the kitchen part of it...I was like, "I want that, and that, and that" I walked out of the cabnit store thinking..."what a bummer, I couldn't even get the cabnits I REALLY WANTED." But you know what it is o.k. It really was a constant lesson in thankfulness. I had to keep reminding myself it IS a blessing to build. To pick out all your favorite colors and flooring....IT IS A BLESSING. It is so hard to do most of the time. So I my have not all of my favorites right now in our home...but I still really love it. I again remind myself now, it was a blessing to be able to even build this house.
